About That Parade . . .

As Babs Would Sing, Don't Rain On My Parade!

A funny thing happened to that proposed Heroes Parade down Broad Street. It was supposed to honor six former narcotics officers found not guilty by a jury two weeks ago on 47 racketeering charges.

But a week after he announced plans on this blog to honor the defendants in the so-called rogue cops case, James J. Binns, the CEO and president of the annual Hero Thrill Show, changed his mind.

"In my opinion, it's more important for these men to enjoy their families and get their lives back in order after what has unquestionably been an ordeal," Binns said in a phone interview.

"The Hero Thrill Show stands on its own merit," Binns said. "There should be no confusion here."

The thrill show, he said is about raising money to pay for the education of the children of police officers and firefighters who have "given their lives in the line of duty," Binns said. "And nothing should detract from that."

Certainly not a "bunch of pissants," Binns said, referring to the critics still sniping at the defendants.

It's been a week since Binns sent up a trial balloon about a parade honoring the former narcs.

Last Friday, Binns, one of the defense lawyers in the case, told Big Trial, "These heroes have been vilified in the press and it's time that they were recognized as the heroes they are."

That's why Binns wanted the six former members of the Narcotics Field Unit to ride as grand marshals in a parade down Broad St., on their way to the Oct. 10th Hero Thrill Show at the Wells Fargo Center.

A week later, Binns told The Philadelphia Inquirer, "I just think that all things considered, it was better to stick with Cathy."

Cathy is Cathy Burke, owner of the Irish Pub. According to what Binns told the Inquirer, Burke will ride in a white Bentley convertible as the grand marshal of the parade, rather than the six former narcs.

Some people think it would be inappropriate to honor the former narcs with a parade.

The Inquirer reported a tweet by Ed McCann, first assistant at the Philadelphia district attorney's office who said, " A not guilty verdict means the prosecution didn't prove its case. Doesn't mean you are innocent or owed an apology and a parade in your honor."

That quote ticked off Binns, who referred to McCann as a "little pissant."

"If he [McCann] got into Mike Spicer's car on a Friday night he would need seven changes of underwear," Binns said.

Binns defended former Police Officer Michael Spicer for free. Spicer, a former milkman, was the only one of the six defendants to testify at the seven-week trial that concluded with all six defendants being acquitted on all 47 charges contained in a  26-count racketeering indictment.

As far as the Hero Thrill Show is concerned, no matter who the grand marshal is, it's still a worthy cause.

  1. Ed McCann was not in the court room to hear the testimony of all involved.
If he was he would know these officers are innocent and this was nothing more than a witch-hunt

  2. Ed McCann is a CRIMINAL as well as Seth Williams. They released and/or withdrew (270) criminal cases and unleashed numerous dangerous violent drug offenders onto the streets of Philadelphia to prey on the citizens of this city without just cause. Their actions were nothing less then completely irresponsible and a violation of the sworn oath they took to protect and serve the citizens of this city. Everyone should have then and now demand why they did what they did instead of simply accepting the phrase "no comment" when asked to explain their actions. They are the ones who are and are going to cost this city millions of dollars in tax payers money. You citizens deserve an answer other than "no comment". These criminals, Seth Williams and Ed McCann are guilty of violation of civil rights and obstruction of justice on a grand scale. Ed McCann's comments on twitter are an insult to all Philadelphia citizens as he has decided that (12) people who listened to weeks of testimony are not intellectually equipped to determine that based on the evidence and testimony, the Federal Prosecution's case was not simply weak, but reeked of malicious intent, unethical conduct and criminal intent on behalf of the Federal Prosecutors and the FBI Agents assigned to the case. When the jury foreman read out each and every verdict, he looked directly at the Federal Prosecutor with disgust in his eyes and said to him "NOT GUILTY 47 times". This is telling regarding how these jurors felt about the prosecutors and the case they presented to the jurors. There is so much more to this story and it is hoped that some day you, the citizens of Philadelphia will have the opportunity to learn all the truths and what your city leaders and Government have not only done to these officers, but to you all who have a right to expect more of your city leaders.

  3. Most likely scenario is an implied threat by the city to withhold the use of police assets to the Hero Scholarship show, thus ending the long running association or the city got corporate supporters to question the idea of honoring the six freed officers in Rolls Royce convertibles going down Broad Street to Wells Fargo parking lot in the stadium district. Binns got the advice of the benefactors of how uneasy they felt about this show of six Rolls Royces motoring down the street and he wised up by making the change. After all, corporate supporters are always sensitive about public opinion, even the minority opinion of Ed Mc Cann which cut to the bone.

McCann's assertions that one who is found innocent is still guilty is horseshit and totally offensive to all those who cherish the creation and enforcement of the law. Were we to embrace what McCann said, we would be throwing just declared innocent people back into jail and asking for a new trial with a different jury to hear the case again.

Most likely scenario, the six officers will not get their jobs back but will get back pay from the day they were arrested. However, they will get financial settlements to make up for future income lost (no overtime) until the time they were eligible to retire and health benefits to continue untilt they become eligible for Medicare. FOP can get legal fees paid on their behalf by the city. To have them back and to put them on the Narcotic Strike Force would not be a good idea as their presence would only empower drug dealers to arm themselves accordingly for a deadly firefight with the officers.

Those officers could end up working for suburban police forces, given their knowledge of the job.

  5. I personally NEVER thought it was a good idea. People are entitled to his/her feeligs, but there is a lot of people who didn't support these officers, don't like the police and needless to say don't like themselves. However, the case is over deal with what the finding are...."NOT GUILTY". Every citizen has a right to be protected and putting these men in vehicles driving down Broad St and the haters being aware of the date and location is just not SAFE to me for these men. There is no telling who is really for them and who is against them so no need for them to be apart of the show.

  6. The parade would have been a bad move. It would have turn me against the 6 cops. The cops beat for 5 out of 6 basically a life sentence. They could be sitting on the 9th fl in the FDC in the shu like 5 of them besides tom lic who spent over 9 months. Lock down for 23 hours a day Meals in ur cell, showers every other day. Very limited phone access. Other inmates screaming ur name n insults. Some guards taunting u. Do i think the 6 cops did some of the stuff they would charge, most def n Speiers shouldnt even been there n he was a little bit cocky during the trial with his badge chasing companion. Those 6 cops get the scare of a lifetime. The fear of guy was placed in them. If they so NO they were scared. They r lying. The case is over. The cops beat the case. Give them their jobs back etc. The govt put the case on the word of some of the biggest low lifes. Walker will prob get 140 months. McMahon did a great job. The other 5 lawyers defer to Jack n rode his coattails n came out looking out great. These cops got alot of drugs n trash off the street n i thank you.

Congratulations and I wish you all luck in getting your jobs back, it's well deserved, you are all great police officers

  11. That cracks me up the women groupies aka bad chasers. Most cops were prob track 3 or 4 in high school. Couldnt find meaningful work so it was either be a cop or a union electrian. Out of the 6 cops wives or gf i cannt see too many cops wanting them. No offense but it is true. Tommy lic wife is kind of sexy. The bottom line is the cops beat the case, give them their jobs back with back pay benefits etc.

    1. Even if a reporter were inclined to write such a story the newspaper would never publish it, as it attacks the U.S. Attorney's Office. In case you haven't noticed, the Inky depends heavily on prosecutors to provide them with targets that they can crusade against and pronounce guilty without benefit of a trial.

  16. Run the table in Federal Court? Rare! Fools like Mcnesby and Binns have the brilliant idea of "rubbing the Feds' faces in it"-note the silence from the other defense counsel, none of whom are clowns. Hope the lads' taxes are correct and their spending matches up to their legit income, or may be round two! Their guilt was not proven, but they are not saints, and a whole lot of bosses should be worried for the same reason.
