Eight Years Ago In Election Court, Rufus Got Caught Using Mom's Credit Cards To Finance His Campaign For Philly D.A.

By Ralph Cipriano
Thanks, Mom

On the witness stand under cross-examination, Rufus Seth Williams explained how he paid for his plane fare, rental car and hotel accommodations when he attended the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Williams said he charged some $1,600 in travel expenses to an American Express credit card that belonged to his adoptive mother, Imelda. But he was in trouble in Election Court because he neglected to report those American Express charges as income.

Judge Allan L. Tereshko was incredulous. “You used your mother’s credit card?” the judge asked.

“That’s correct, Your Honor,” Williams replied.

It happened eight years ago, long before the Philadelphia Board of Ethics fined Williams a record $62,000 this past January for failing to report gifts and income received between 2010 and $2015 for a total worth of $175,000.

  1. Speaking of money problems... The Cycle 1 reports are out. The two $5538 checks to the Union League are listed, with the certified one being returned. But, what happened to the other one? Did the Union League accept it, on 2/22? If not, where did it go? And if they did accept one on 2/22 but returned one on 3/3 for the same oddball amount, what happened in between that they decided they didn't want the money?

Still wondering how the old Friends of Seth Williams contributed $8200 or so to the Seth Williams Victory Committee on 12/31/2015, but the Victory Committee opened its books on 1/1/2016 with a zero balance.

Also still wondering how that accidental $2500 parking expense never got corrected. Whoops. Decimal place slip, right?

These basic accounting errors add up.

And geez, lots of consulting money spent on a race he was about to exit.

  3. So the government has "pole camera" video in this case, and lots of it. Phone taps, too, it looks like, and consensual audio.

Sounds like Seth's job just got a bit harder.

  5. Many parents of students decide to open up credit card accounts for their children or to add them to their own personal accounts. But, another great option is to help the young adult get his or her own personal student credit card. credit cards
